Quick answer
To clean an automatic masturbator, unplug or switch it off, remove the sleeve if it comes out, rinse it inside and out with warm water and a little mild, unscented soap, then rinse again until no soap remains. Wipe the motor housing with a damp cloth unless the toy is rated IPX7. Dry the sleeve completely, inside as well as out, before reassembling or storing it. Damp sleeves are what cause smells and mould.

Most problems with automatic cups, including smells, sticky sleeves and mould, come from putting the sleeve away damp.
This guide is research-based. It draws on manufacturer care instructions and public health guidance on cleaning sex toys. Always follow the instructions that came with your toy if they differ.
What you need
- Warm water
- Mild, unscented soap, or a toy cleaner suitable for TPE
- A soft, lint-free cloth or paper towel
- A drying stick or a clean, airy place to dry the sleeve
- Optional: a soft cleaning brush for textured canals

Step by step
1. Switch off and check the water rating
Turn the toy off and unplug any charging cable. Check the rating on the listing or manual. IPX7 means brief immersion is fine. IPX4 to IPX6 means splash resistance only, so the motor housing should never go under the tap.
2. Remove the sleeve
If the sleeve comes out, take it out. Washing it separately is the only way to reach the whole canal and keep water away from the motor. Multi-sleeve kits like the Bestvibe Pro are designed for this.

3. Rinse straight away
Rinse the sleeve with warm water, not hot, as soon as you can after use. Lube is much easier to remove before it dries.
4. Wash with mild soap
Work a small amount of mild, unscented soap through the canal with your fingers or a soft brush, paying attention to ridges and textured sections. Don’t use alcohol, bleach, scented soap or harsh cleaners. They can damage TPE and irritate skin.
5. Rinse thoroughly
Rinse until there’s no soap left. Soap residue can irritate and makes sleeves feel slippery or sticky.
6. Wipe the housing
Wipe the motor housing and opening with a damp cloth, then dry it. Keep water away from charging ports unless the toy is rated IPX7.
7. Dry completely
This is the step that matters most. Shake out excess water, pat the outside dry, then dry the inside:
- Drying stick: insert it into the canal and leave it for the time the manufacturer suggests. The Bestvibe Captain includes one in the box.
- Air drying: leave the sleeve open, ideally turned inside out if the design allows, in a clean, ventilated place until it’s completely dry inside. That can take several hours.
- Paper towel: roll a sheet loosely and push it gently into the canal to absorb water, then let it air-dry.
Never use a hairdryer on high heat or put a sleeve on a radiator. Heat can warp TPE.

8. Reassemble and store
Once the sleeve is fully dry, refit it, or store it separately in a clean, breathable bag away from dust, direct sunlight and other toys. TPE can react with some other materials and pick up dye from fabrics.

Lube matters for cleaning too
Use a water-based lube. It rinses out easily and is safe for TPE. Oil-based lube can damage TPE and is hard to remove, and silicone lube can be hard to rinse out of textured canals.

When to replace a sleeve
Replace the sleeve if it tears, stays sticky after washing, smells after proper cleaning and drying, or shows any spots of mould. Sleeves wear out with use and washing. Treat them as a replaceable part, not a lifetime one.
Hygiene and sharing
Don’t share a sleeve without washing it first. If a toy is shared, public health guidance recommends cleaning it between users or covering it with a new condom.

Frequently asked questions
How often should I clean my masturbator sleeve?
After every use. Lube and body fluids left in a sleeve feed bacteria and mould, and TPE sleeves can absorb odours if they sit dirty. A quick rinse straight after use, followed by a proper wash and full drying, keeps the sleeve usable for much longer.
Can I use alcohol or bleach on a sleeve?
No. Alcohol, bleach and harsh cleaners can dry out, crack or degrade TPE and other soft elastomers, and they're irritating if any residue is left behind. Warm water with a little mild, unscented soap is enough. Some manufacturers specifically warn against alcohol.
My sleeve smells even after washing. What should I do?
A lingering smell usually means moisture has been trapped inside. Wash it again, rinse thoroughly, and dry it fully with a drying stick or by leaving it open in a well-ventilated place. If it still smells, feels sticky, or you see spots of mould, replace the sleeve.
Can I put the whole masturbator under the tap?
Only if it's rated IPX7 or the manufacturer says it can be submerged. Most automatic cups are IPX4 to IPX6, which means splash resistance only. For those, remove the sleeve and wash it separately, and wipe the housing with a damp cloth.
Should I powder a TPE sleeve?
Some owners lightly dust a fully dry TPE sleeve with cornstarch or a renewal powder to stop it feeling tacky. It's optional. Only do it once the sleeve is completely dry, and rinse the powder off before the next use.
