Choosing a dildo comes down to four things, in this order: size (insertable length and, more importantly, diameter), firmness, material and features. Body-safe silicone is the default recommendation because it is non-porous and easy to clean. A simple non-powered silicone dildo with a suction cup is the cheapest good option. Thrusting dildos add a motor that moves the shaft in and out, so you don’t have to.

Materials and care

Silicone, glass and stainless steel are non-porous. PVC and “jelly” toys can be porous and may contain plasticisers, so we don’t recommend them for internal use. Toy materials explained covers each material. Use water-based lube with silicone toys (see the lube compatibility guide), and clean after every use as described in how to clean your sex toys safely.
